THREE TIMES FAST

Tatum placed another scoop of potato salad onto her plate. Nadine’s baby shower was lavish, being held at a country club overlooking the river. They decked everything out in various shades of blue to celebrate the coming of little Eddie Junior. They filled tables upon tables with gifts, many of them from Eddie’s former teammates and celebrities in attendance. The blue skies against the golf greens were picture perfect. They couldn’t ask for a more gorgeous day.

Alisa saddled up next to Tatum in the buffet line, adding a couple of deviled eggs to her plate. She lowered her head to whisper, “I thought I was going to have to call the cops on you. You missed your hair appointment last week. I haven’t heard from you in forever! Getting your back blown out by three lucky gents?”

“Shh, Alisa!” Tatum rolled her eyes, moving down the buffet line to the carving station. “You can’t whisper worth a damn. And second, I’ve just been busy with my summer classes, that’s all.”

“I call bullshit,” said Alisa, motioning the server to add salmon to her plate. “I know for a fact summer classes have been over for a week now. By now, we would have been out having margaritas or something. What’s up?”

The ladies made their way back to their table where Nadine, Eddie, and Alex were also sitting. She smiled as Eddie rubbed Nadine’s stomach gingerly, giving her sweet pecks on her cheek. Alex rolled her eyes at her parents who were clearly annoying her. It was sweet.

“Okay, so spill it, sis,” said Alisa, not letting up. “Please tell me you’re getting your back blown out.”

“Who’s getting their back blown out?” asked Nadine, leaning toward the pair. Tatum cut her eyes at Alisa, who winced.

“No one!” said Tatum, throwing her hands up. “Come on, this is a baby shower.”

“And a perfect place to talk sex. Given that’s how babies are made,” chuckled Alisa. Tatum pinched her on her thigh, and she frowned.

“Eddie, can you get me some punch?” asked Nadine, batting her eyes sweetly at her super tall husband.

Eddie laughed. “You ain’t slick, Deanie. You just want to get rid of me so you can get this tea. C’mon, Alex, let’s leave these chicks so they can gossip.”

“Uh huh,” protested Alex. “I wanna hear about Auntie Tate and her three boyfriends.”

Tatum lowered her head. “I don’t have three boyfriends. Eddie, she’s exaggerating.”

Eddie threw up his hands. “I didn’t hear anything. I’m getting punch.” Eddie turned with a laugh, grabbed Alex by the arm, and headed toward the punch table. Once the coast was clear, Nadine leaned over as far as her belly would allow. “Tate, what’s going on? The arrangement not working out?”

Tatum put some potato salad in her mouth. “I can’t say it’s doing anything. I don't think this is for me.”

“Why? What happened?” asked Alisa, stuffing a meatball into her mouth. “Did things get too freaky?”

“Yeah, but not in the way you would think,” said Tatum.

Nadine and Alisa looked at each other, curious.
